Hospital Delivery Rooms Isolation of Potential Pathogenic Bacteria from the Air

This study aimed to investigate the hygienic conditions of the air at delivery and nursing rooms at some hospital located in Kartoum district Sudan. Bacterial infections still play considerable role in diseases in Sudan. Air is not a suitable medium for growth of the pathogenic bacteria, any pathogen, that airborne must have originated from a source such as humans, animals soil, food or water. This study was done at Khartoum Teaching Hospital and Omdurman Maternity Hospital. The sample technique for monitoring air borne microbial contamination is sedimentation technique using open petri-dishes containing different media.

Operating Room Nurse Coordinator and Communicator

To achieve the potential inherent in the use of computer applications in distributed environments, we need to understand the information needs of users. The purpose of this descriptive study was to document the communication of an operating room charge nurse to inform the design of technological communication applications for operating room coordination. The primary goal of operating room coordination is to insure the prompt, safe, and effective care of surgical patients. Central to this goal is the operating room (OR) charge nurse. The charge nurse is integrally involved in insuring that staff, patients, and equipment come together seamlessly to move patients through the surgical process.

Operating Room Communication Methods Between Nurses and Surgeons

Orginal Research Journal : This paper is a report of a study conducted to explore whether a 1- to 3-minute preoperative interprofessional team briefing with a structured checklist was an effective way to support communication in the operating room. Background. We conducted a retrospective study of silences observed in communication between nurses and surgeons in a multi-site observational study of interprofessional communication in the operating room. Over 700 surgical procedures were observed from 2005–2007. Instances of communication characterized by unresolved or unarticulated issues were identified in field notes and analysed from a critical ethnography perspective. There is no single answer to the question of why ‘nobody said anything’. Exploring silences in relation to power suggests that there are multiple and complex ways that constrained communication is produced in the operating room, which are essential to understand in order to improve interprofessional communication and collaboration.

How to Reduce Exposure Risk in the Operating Room

The purpose of this article is to evaluate and recommend current best practices related to safe handling of sharp instruments in reducing transmission of blood borne pathogens, specifically HIV, in the operating suite. The information in this paper was synthesized from a literature review and key informant interviews. The literature review consisted of a search in the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) database and the Highwire Press database of peer-reviewed scientific journals using keywords such as “operating room,” “prevent,” “protect,” “HIV,” “sharps injuries,” as well as categories such as “occupational exposure prevention and control.”More than five hundred articles were found in the databases searched. Abstracts from approximately seventy-five journal articles were reviewed. From these articles, five studies were chosen for review and rated on the strength of their evidence using the levels identified by Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2005) with level I being the strongest level of evidence. See Table 1, Rating System for Hierarchy of Evidence.

Nursing Management of the Pediatric Patient : Care Guideline

Caring for a pediatric patient on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) requires the nurse to have a strong understanding of the function of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and anticoagulation status. The bedside nurse must use proper assessment tools in caring for pediatric patients requiring ECMO. He/she must make interventions that are timely and appropriate, as these patients typically have severe cardio-respiratory dysfunction. Common Problem: Alteration in respiratory function and nosocomial pneumonia related to required bed rest. Alteration in cardiovascular function related to inadequate cardiac output: pump failure. Potential for impairment of skin integrity secondary to altered tissue perfusion, edema and immobility.

Hospital Operating Room Planning : analyzing strategies and problem settings

Operating room planning is a complex task which has to consider many aspects such as surgeon scheduling, operating team scheduling (included anaesthetic personnel), patient related information, (i.e. estimated operating time, priority and diagnosis), equipments and surrounding activities like intensive care unit etc. In this paper, we first introduce the problem as experienced from two hospitals of different types. Then, an optimization model is suggested and the generation of input-parameters is presented. Different scenarios are created and the result of using the optimization model is presented. Finally, conclusions and directions for future research are outlined.
