Theoretical Computer Science Journal : Lower Bounds for Linear Satisability Problems

We prove an (ndr=2e) lower bound for the following problem: For some xed linear equation in r variables, given n real numbers, do any r of them satisfy the equation? Our lower bound holds in a
restricted linear decision tree model, in which each decision is based on the sign of an arbitrary linear combination of r or fewer inputs. In this model, our lower bound is as large as possible. Previously, this lower bound was known only for a few special cases and only in more specialized models of computation.

Furniture Manufacturing Efficiency Guide: Waste Minimization

Much of the waste from furniture manufacturing is disposed of to landfill. The cost of this disposal route is rising, causing manufacturers to re-examine their process waste to see if it can be reduced. To save the most money from waste reduction, waste must be prevented from occurring in the first place. This Good Practice Guide takes furniture manufacturers step by step through ways to look again at their processes and identify where waste - and costs - can be reduced. This Good Practice Guide will also help furniture manufacturers facing competition from abroad by improving their overall efficiency and performance. The Guide describes the main areas where waste is generated within the industry and introduces methods and techniques for its minimisation in each one. The Guide follows a systematic approach to the implementation of a full waste minimisation programme, offering guidance on how to implement a strategy from the start, and on specific waste minimisation practices.
